Notice of Intended Marriage QLD: Timeline, Rules & How to Lodge Your NOIM
If you’re planning to get married in Queensland (or anywhere in Australia), there’s one piece of paperwork you absolutely can’t skip—the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).
It might not be the most exciting part of your wedding planning… but it is the most important.
The good news? It’s actually very simple once you know what you’re doing—and I’ll walk you through it so it feels easy, not overwhelming.
What is a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)?
The Notice of Intended Marriage is the legal form you must complete before you can get married anywhere in Australia.
In simple terms, it’s your official declaration that:
You intend to marry
You’re legally allowed to marry
You’ve given the required notice period
👉 Without a NOIM, your wedding ceremony cannot legally go ahead. The NOIM was last updated in 2021.
What is the 1-Month Rule for Marriage in QLD?
This is the big one—and where couples sometimes get caught out.
👉 You must lodge your NOIM at least one calendar month before your wedding date
That means:
Lodge on 10 March → Earliest wedding date is 10 April
It’s not 30 days… and it’s not flexible unless you’re granted special approval (more on that below).
How Long is a NOIM Valid?
Your NOIM doesn’t last forever—so timing matters.
👉 A Notice of Intended Marriage is valid for 18 months from the date you lodge it
That means:
You can’t get married before 1 month
You must get married within 18 months
If it expires, you’ll need to complete a new one.
How Do You Lodge a Notice of Intended Marriage in QLD?
There are a couple of ways to do this, but the easiest (and least stressful) option is to do it with your celebrant.
✔️ Option 1: Lodge your NOIM with your celebrant (recommended)
This is how I do it with my couples:
We complete the form together
I make sure everything is correct
I witness your signatures properly
I check all your documents
It’s quick, simple, and you know it’s done right the first time. This can also be done via a zoom call if required.
✔️ Option 2: Complete it yourself
You can fill out the NOIM form yourself, but:
It must be witnessed by an authorised person
Your celebrant must still sight original documents before the wedding
This option can be a little more fiddly—but totally doable.
What Documents Do You Need for a NOIM?
To lodge your Notice of Intended Marriage, you’ll ideally need (but not essential at this point but required before you get married):
Photo ID (passport or driver’s licence)
Birth certificate or passport
Proof of how any previous marriage ended (if applicable)
Divorce certificate or death certificate
This is one of those areas where having a celebrant guide you makes things much smoother.
Can You Get Married in Less Than 1 Month?
Yes—but only in specific circumstances.
This is called a Shortening of Time, and it’s not automatically approved.
Valid reasons might include:
Work or travel commitments
Medical situations
Legal or visa requirements
It must be approved by a prescribed authority (typically a Local Court Registrar or Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages)—not your celebrant—and supporting evidence is required. Your Celebrant will guide you through this.
👉 If you’re on a tight timeline, it’s always best to ask early so we can look at your options.
When Should You Lodge Your NOIM?
My honest advice? As soon as you’ve booked your celebrant and locked in your date.
For most Brisbane couples:
6–12 months before your wedding = ideal
Earlier for peak seasons (spring and autumn especially)
Getting this done early gives you peace of mind—and ticks off the most important legal step.
Common NOIM Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)
A few things I regularly see:
❌ Leaving it too late
❌ Not realising it’s a calendar month
❌ Assuming it can be done last minute
✔️ The fix? Lodge early and do it properly the first time.
Planning a Legals Only or Elopement Wedding in Brisbane?
If you’re planning something simple like a legals-only wedding or Brisbane elopement, the NOIM is still required—but the process can be fast and stress-free when it’s handled properly.
This is something I help couples with all the time:
Quick, easy paperwork
Clear guidance
A relaxed, no-fuss experience
Frequently Asked Questions About the NOIM
Can I lodge a NOIM online in Australia?
Yes, you can complete the form online—but it still needs to be witnessed and finalised with your celebrant. This can also be witnessed via a video call.
Do both partners need to be present?
Not always. One person can lodge it the month prior, but both parties must sign.
What happens if my NOIM expires?
You’ll need to complete and lodge a new one before getting married.
HOW DOES a celebrant HELP WITH THE NOIM?
Your celebrant will guide you through it, check everything, and ensure it’s properly lodged and compliant.
