Which Finger Does the Engagement Ring Go On for the Wedding Ceremony?
đź’Ť Which Finger Does the Engagement Ring Go On for the Wedding Ceremony?
(Australian Wedding Traditions Explained)
As a Brisbane Marriage Celebrant, one of the questions I’m often asked in the lead-up to the wedding day is:
“Which hand (or finger!) should I wear my engagement ring on during the ceremony?”
It’s a small detail—but one that matters when you’re standing at the altar, holding hands, and slipping on your wedding bands. So, let’s clear up the tradition and explore your options.
đź’Ť The Traditional Australian Way
In Australia (and most Western countries), the wedding ring is traditionally worn on the fourth finger of the left hand—often called the “ring finger.”
This tradition dates back to ancient Roman times when it was believed that a vein—the “vena amoris” or “vein of love”—ran directly from that finger to the heart. Romantic, right? ❤️
Because of this, your wedding band is usually placed on the left ring finger first, closest to your heart.
đź’Ž So What Happens to the Engagement Ring?
On your wedding day, most couples choose to move the engagement ring to the right hand before the ceremony.
That way, when your partner slides your new wedding band onto your left ring finger, it sits below your engagement ring—closer to your heart.
After the ceremony, you can:
Move your engagement ring back to the left hand, so it sits neatly above your wedding band, or
Keep it on your right hand for a modern, minimalist look.
There’s no wrong choice—it’s entirely up to your style and comfort.
🌏 Cultural Variations
Not every country follows the same rule. In some European and South American countries (like Germany, Russia, Norway, and Spain), both rings are worn on the right hand.
So if you or your partner have cultural ties overseas, you might choose to honour that tradition instead.
✨ Celebrant’s Tip
If you’re wearing gloves, have long nails, or want to avoid fiddling with your jewellery mid-ceremony, decide beforehand where your rings will go and let your photographer know.
That way, they’ll capture those special ring-exchange moments perfectly!
đź’¬ Final Thoughts
Whether you follow tradition or make your own, what matters most is the meaning behind the rings—your love, commitment, and the start of your married life together.
And remember, there’s no “right” or “wrong” finger… only what feels right for you.
