How to Change Your Name After Marriage in Australia (Step-by-Step Guide)

One of the most common questions I get as a celebrant is: “How do I actually change my name after we’re married?”

The good news? It’s much easier than most couples expect.

Changing your name after marriage in Australia doesn’t usually require a formal legal name change. Once you have your official marriage certificate, you can start updating your name across your ID, passport, and personal records.

Here’s exactly how it works 👇

Do I have to change my name after marriage?

No—absolutely not.

Changing your name is completely optional. Many couples:

  • Keep their own names

  • Take their partner’s name

  • Hyphenate or combine names

There’s no “right” choice—just what feels right for you.

What do I need to change my name?

Before you can update anything, you’ll need your official marriage certificate.

This is the one issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages—not the ceremonial certificate you sign on the day.

As your celebrant, I lodge your paperwork after your ceremony, and I am also able to apply for your official certificate on your behalf if you like, this makes it a lot easier for you (saving you from needing to get a certified copy of your ID and completing the form yourself).

Step-by-step: How to change your name after marriage in Australia

Once your certificate arrives, here’s your checklist:

1. Update your driver’s licence

This is usually the first step, as it becomes your primary ID.

2. Update your passport

If your passport is current, you may be able to update it at a reduced cost (depending on timing).

3. Update Medicare and MyGov

This helps flow through to other government services.

4. Notify your bank and financial institutions

This includes:

  • Bank accounts

  • Credit cards

  • Superannuation

5. Update the ATO

This is often done automatically via MyGov, but it’s worth checking.

6. Update other records

Such as:

  • Insurance

  • Utilities

  • Subscriptions

  • Work/payroll

💡 Tip: Start with your most important ID, then work your way through everything else.

How long does it take to change your name?

It varies, but generally:

  • Marriage certificate: 1–3 weeks (depending on processing times)

  • Licence update: often same day

  • Passport: around 2–6 weeks

  • Everything else: a few days to a couple of weeks

Most people complete the full process within 2–6 weeks.

How much does it cost?

Costs are fairly minimal and may include:

  • Marriage certificate fee (in Queensland this is around $56 + postage)

  • Passport update (if applicable, usually free)

  • Some state-based licence fees (often free or low cost)

There’s no fee to “legally” change your name after marriage if you’re simply taking your spouse’s surname.

Do I need to legally register a name change?

In most cases, no.

If you’re:

  • Taking your partner’s surname

  • Returning to a previous name

Your marriage certificate is all you need.

You would only need a formal legal name change if you’re choosing something completely different.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my name later?

Yes—you don’t have to do it straight away. You can change your name months or even years after your wedding.

Can I use both names?

Yes. Some people use one name socially and another professionally, though it’s best to keep legal documents consistent.

Do I have to update everything at once?

No—there’s no strict deadline. You can do it gradually.

What if I get married overseas?

You can still change your name in Australia, but you’ll need your overseas marriage certificate recognised here.

A little advice from me

After officiating so many weddings around Brisbane, I can tell you this—every couple approaches this differently.

Some are organised and update everything straight away. Others take their time. Both are completely fine.

The most important thing is that it feels right for you.

Planning your wedding?

If you’re still in the planning stage and want a ceremony that feels relaxed, personal, and genuinely “you”, I’d love to help.
